Leesa Fanning (’82 design), Curator of Contemporary Art at The Nelson-Atkins Museum, is the Distinguished Alumni Speaker at Current Perspectives on April 20.
She wrote her dissertation on Abstract Expressionism, specifically on the work of Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Willem De Kooning and she holds a doctorate in art history from the University of Kansas. Fanning has taught art history classes at KU, UMKC and KCAI.
Since joining the Nelson-Atkins in 1998, Fanning has focused on contemporary art. She recently curated Janet Cardiff: Forty-Part Motet, Nick Cave: Property, Philip Haas’ The Four Seasons, Bill Viola’s The Raft, OpenEnded Group and Bill T. Jones’ After Ghostcatching, Cao Fei’s RMB City Opera, Wolfgang Laib: Without Place—Without Time—Without Body, and Tapping Currents: Contemporary African Art and the Diaspora.

Fanning is also developing a scholarly publication—a fully illustrated 325 book—for spring of 2018 on spirituality in contemporary global art.
